Hrithik Roshan was heard giving some advice to Imran Khan recently when they both bumped into each other at an airport.

During the rare encounter, Roshan congratulated Khan on hearing about his marriage and advised short breaks with his wife Avantika. He said, “You must take small breaks from work whenever you can and spend time with the wife.’”

Apparently, Roshan was overheard saying, “I worked so hard for the first few years of my life that I hardly spent time with Sussanne. I think I took my honeymoon almost four years after my wedding. I realised later that one should never compromise on family time. So, I’m telling you, that you must make time for your family and friends whenever you can. You must never have to regret the fact that you only worked in your youth and didn’t make time for the family.”

This is my blog for the last five and on why people seem to have such good intention but is not feasible, such as in each block. I have a problem and solution. If you miss this series. Here's a recap ...

overweightThis person has a good intention. Your butt off in the gym – but when it comes to food is big.

This person is more likely to enjoy working out or at least ignore it. Their results are the first to post crazy workouts and share their hard work to make people see their amazing efforts. Scores of people to feel sorry for the people in this category, so when they find out it does not lose weight because they believe that hard work, this person looks like they have a good intention, but does not have the sangwoei this person per God (and if you know me, that there should be a comedy because I believe in God. Sangwoei is not a mystical God, people continue to lose weight).

OK, back to this task difficult. The problem is that people believe this should fully control their weight. With exercise – and while the exercise is useful and can improve health, there is no competition for food. Exercise will always have disappeared or are in decline, think they're eating healthier and eating less calories than they truly are.

Solution: these people need to understand that exercise is not tough enough when it comes to reducing weight. They can do aerobics on the maniac (FlashDance my throwback), but until they are, they are not kitchen maniac 100% smooth the benefits of their hard work. It is time for this person to fit them both in the gym and the dining table.

A Q&A with CEO Mark Murphy

There isn’t a presenter alive that doesn’t want their audience absolutely riveted; sitting on the edge of their seats with rapt attention. Yet, the reality in most presentations is that the audience is sitting back, kind of relaxed and spacing in and out.

Here Leadership IQ CEO and best-selling author, Mark Murphy, shares some ways anyone can deliver a killer presentation.

Q: You say storytelling is a critical element in delivering killer presentations that really catch and keep an audience’s attention. How does that work?

MM: It’s all about dopaminergic response. Basically, when something really interesting, like a good story, happens, the brain starts to light up. And if the story is really exciting, the amygdala gets involved (that’s what you want) and says, “Wow! This is fascinating stuff! I’ve got to start activating some of the other chemicals in the brain—we’ve got to pay close attention to this!” So it goes and starts activating dopamine, which is a neurotransmitter for highly pleasurable things, highly attentive things.

And whoa! Once dopamine gets involved people really start to pay attention. Plus dopamine helps sear whatever it is folks are experiencing (in this case, your killer presentation) into their memory so they don’t forget it. So a great story is a way of getting the brain to say, “I am really engaged with this. I don’t want to miss a word that’s being said here. I am going to remember every word I hear.”

Next time you’re listening to someone else’s presentation, pay attention and see if you experience any moments that leap out at you and just get seared into your brain. Where you walk out of there quoting something you just heard to everyone you run into that day. If you don’t have that kind of experience then it is likely that the person speaking didn’t get anywhere near activating anything beyond your prefrontal cortex. They didn’t get into your limbic system, and they certainly didn’t excite your amygdala.

Q: So what’s the secret to telling a great story that excites the amygdala?

MM: There are a number of different ways to tell stories that really get people’s attention. Here’s one that uses an unexpected twist. Imagine you began a presentation by saying, “Six months ago, we upgraded our servers. Our website visitor capacity doubled. Our website loading speed tripled. And our profits dropped by 80%.” You can do something like that. Take your audience in one direction and then all of a sudden take them in a totally different direction. That’s one of those things that will make people’s heads spin a bit and get them to think, “Wait a minute, did I just hear what I thought I heard? I better start listening more closely.” You can also tell stories that build an emotional connection or introduce a startling fact.

Q: What’s one big thing to avoid when giving a presentation?

MM: Narcissism. When you talk about others more than you talk about yourself, that’s good. But when you talk about yourself more than you talk about others, that’s bad. But that can be challenging in some presentation situations. Leadership IQ teaches presenters to apply the Narcissism Ratio which is a little check that signals when it’s time to tell a story or to talk about somebody or something other than yourself. That way you don’t spend 20 minutes talking about all of the awards your company has won – something about which your audience probably doesn’t care. And it directs you to talk about something about which they do care, something that’s really going to activate them and get them on the edge of their seats.

To apply the Narcissism Ratio to your next presentation, keep track of how many times you say “I” or “me” versus the number of times you say “customers” or “employees” or “you” or “they” or anybody other than you. It takes some practice, but it’s really quite an effective way to keep your finger on the pulse of where your presentation is going as it happens. That way you are always on track and making sure your  audience stays fully engaged.

Free Fitness Motivation for Your iPhone

You should always keep your goals right in front of you. If you don’t, it’s easy to stray. I swear, something I think I need to post them on my forehead to keep me on track. I need a constant reminder that I CAN do this, that it IS worth it and that I WILL succeed – as long as I stick with it. Well, now I can, and YOU CAN TOO!

How many times do you look at your phone? More times than you probably want to admit. It’s scary how often we are on our phone – so why not use it to motivate us, to keep us focused, and to challenge us to stick to our fitness routine or diet?

I recently turned one of my photo mantras into wallpaper for my lock screen on my iphone. Every time I open my iphone, it reminds me who’s boss – and encourages me to stick to my plan. After posting the screenshot on my facebook, I got some good feedback, so I decided to make a few for YOU!!

I have created 120 motivational mantra pictures. However, they were created in a square format for easy sharing on instagram, facebook, twitter, etc., so they have to be recreated to fit the slender rectangular iPhone screens. CLICK HERE to view them all.

make changeThis is a concept that is simple: "nothing changes if nothing changes," Wow, what a revelation. I'm sure you know, but you do not bet anything that you have not give virtual tour. We claim so many things in our lives. The people we do. Our job but we didn't do our frustrates updates or find another job. Our marriage can make a mess. But we are too busy to help us resolve our weight control or too and we just do what we always do hope someday that will change the way Retarded is.

I believe that our people are caught in this vicious cycle because we let our lives directly. We are directing our lives instead of us. We are in survival mode, paycheck to paycheck the day. ' "If I can just get through this. How do I. .. " I have news for you, you will never "get through this". You may be able to get through this trial only. This season, some difficult, but as soon as today or you get through this "always" have a "wait for you".

waitingYou have to make a decision. You can keep waiting for a good time to work on something that you know what you want. Working on the rejecting life easier for your schedule and will open so you can make your dream true, or you can accept the fact that there is no better time to get your life right health. Edit a relationship or a good job honestly. Now is the appropriate time.

Believe me. How do I know? I have put a stop to close friendships, family, marriage. Children and other opportunities for many years. Under the assumption there will be "better." I am 41 years old now, and I want to know when they will come.

I can't wait for the time to be open with my time.
• If you want to reduce weight and get in better shape.
I can't wait for the time to run it. There is work to do time.

Nothing Changes If Nothing Changes

make changeHere is a simple concept: “Nothing changes if nothing changes”. WOW! What a revelation! I’m sure you already knew that, but I bet you haven’t always practiced what you’ve known. We complain about so many things in our life, yet many of us do nothing to make them better. Our job frustrates us, but we don’t work to improve it or find another job. Our marriage can be a mess, but we are too busy to get the help we need to fix it. Or, our weight is out of control, and we just keep doing what we always do, hoping someday it will change. How retarded is that?

I believe many of us get caught in this vicious cycle because we let our life direct us, instead of us directing our life. We live in survival mode, paycheck to paycheck, day to day, always thinking “if I can just get through this, I will..”. I’ve got news for you. You will never “get through this”.  Sure, you might get through this particular trial, this season, this certain difficulty or this day, but as soon as you get through “this”, there will always be another “this” waiting for you.

You can keep waiting for a better time to work on the things you know you need to be working on, and live in denial, waiting for life to be easier and your schedule to open up so you can make your dreams come true. OR, you can accept the fact that there is no good time to get healthy, get your life right, fix a relationship or get a better job. Honestly, NOW is the ONLY time that is right.

Believe me, I know. I have put off friendships, vacations, family, marriage, kids and many other opportunities for YEARS, under the assumption that there would be a “better time”. Now, I am 41 years old and I realize that time will NEVER come.

• If I want more time with the ones I love,
I can’t wait for time to open up, I have to open my time up.
• If I want to lose weight and get in better shape,
I can’t wait for the right time to work on it, I have to work on making the right time to do it.
• If I want to make more money or get a better job,
I can’t hope someone notices & values me, I have to work hard to be noticed & valued.
• If I want a better marriage,
I can’t wait for a magical moment, I have to create magical moments.
• If I want to get my life on the right track, 
I can’t wait for my life to straighten out before I start working on it, I have to work on it (while it’s completely a mess) to begin straightening it out. 

Our life will NEVER change unless we change it. What are some of the things you want to change? Are you doing what you need to do to make those changes? If not, you are wasting precious time. You don’t have to wait for change – make it.

Birthday wishes for Dancing Superstar Shahid Kapoor

As Shahid Kapoor celebrates his birthday, it is clear to see that he has a lot to be thankful for. He is in the process of wrapping up a three month schedule shooting ‘Phata Poster Nikla Hero’ soon to be released later on this year, starring alongside Ileana D’ Cruz.  Despite his family being very much involved in the industry, Kapoor has worked hard to get where he is today. His dance numbers are always items to be talked about in every film he has starred in and even before he became the star he is today, Kapoor was a background dancer in ‘Dil To Pagal Hai’ (1997) and ‘Taal’ (1999). We at BizAsia are taking a look some of the best of his dance numbers which have left us tapping our toes to his beat.

Aaja Ve Mahi – ‘Fida’ (2004)
If ever there was a song that showed off Kapoor’s dancing talents, this would be it and being paired with then girlfriend Kareena Kapoor, he was all the more enthusiastic on the dance floor. Kapoor was relatively new to the industry at this point but his dancing skills were gaining the attention of directors and choreographers. This song is set in a nightclub and he wore a skin tight that showed off his chest and his built arms. The song itself was catchy and helped make this number even more popular with the audience.

Dil Vich Lagya – ‘Chup Chup Ke’ (2006)
‘Chup Chup Ke’ was a big hit for Kapoor and it showed off his acting talents at his best.  This song was the accumulation of many events that take place in the film and Kapoor rocked the song in his own way, reaffirming his heartthrob status in the industry. His energetic dance moves brought this song to life and made it one of the dance floor hits at weddings and parties for that year.

Do Anjaane Ajnabi – ‘Vivah’ (2006)
Although not strictly a dance number, this song and the way it was acted by Kapoor showed off his romantic hero acting skills. In the song, he is coming to meet Amrita Rao’s character for the first time and the expressions shown by the actor displays his character’s feelings so well without him saying a word.  The music by Ravindra Jain was blissfully sweet and was the perfect partner to the storyline.

Mauja Hi Mauja – ‘Jab We Met’ (2007)
This film bought Kapoor out to the Bollywood mainstream with his character depressed businessman Aditya Kashyap . There were many dance numbers in the film but this one in particular hit the radio waves and is still played repeatedly till this day. The peppy beat coupled with his fun and fast dance moves made this tune a chart topper.

Ae Paapi – ‘Kismat Konnection’ (2008)
As street dance became the big thing, it didn’t surpass Bollywood and Kapoor embraced it in this song. His super cool black waistcoat and jeans set a trend and it was clear to see that he was emulating one of his idols, the late Michael Jackson.  Though his pairing with actress Vidya Balan was contested by many, Kapoor’s fancy footwork left the audiences gasping for more.

Hadippa – ‘Dil Bole Hadippa’ (2009)
Bhangra has always been a style of dancing that came easily to Kapoor yet in this song; he took it to another level. Paired with equally energetic dancer Rani Mukerji, they set the screen alight in this song and really made it their own.  Although the song was not a part of the film’s main storyline, this song was still the one that stood out among the other dance numbers in this song because of the carefully choreographed dance moves.

Jabse Mere Dil Ko Uff – ‘Teri Meri Kahaani’ (2012)
His ability to emulate other artists have made him a favourite at awards performances and for him to take inspiration from one of the Bollywood greats Shashi Kapoor in this song made it even more amazing. The sixties inspired performance was carried off flawlessly and his inner energy made him a perfect match for it. The song’s lyrics combined with the vocals of Sonu Nigam made this dance number the one to watch in this film.

So here’s wishing the ever energetic Shahid Kapoor a very happy birthday from the BizAsia team. Your dance numbers long outlive your films and they still have us dancing to the beat no matter the occasion. We wish you all the best for the coming year!

Are You Making Fitness Harder Than It Needs To Be

Fitness doesn't have to be that hardHave you ever looked at someone else and thought “they make it look so easy”? Or, you look at others and you think “no fair, I am working way harder than them and not getting the results they are getting”. There might be a reason. You may be making fitness harder than it has to be. The damage may have started before you ever began working out. So, it may not be about how hard you are working now, but what led up to where you are now that is giving you such a beating.

Laziness: Disinclined to work. Slow moving, Idle. Sluggish. Slothful

lazinessLaziness is very interesting to me. It’s not like anyone would want to be called sloth, yet we all have had our own battle with laziness at times. Have you ever thought how hard we actually work to be lazy?

I think of all the times I have dropped something, all because I was carrying too much to avoid making multiple trips. The final result is often more work than if I just did things the right way the first time. Some of the things we do out of pure laziness can be just plain silly (like the person in this car rolling his trashcan to the street). Actually, it’s not silly, it’s really kind of stupid.

We do it with fitness too. I have worked way harder than I needed to at the gym when I’ve been lazy with my diet, simply because I’m not doing the work I should in the kitchen to manage my calories properly. Again, the lazier I am, the harder I have to work.

don't wait until it's too lateProcrastination is the same way. Just think of all the unnecessary stress we would have if we did everything we should do when we should do it. We wouldn’t be totally freaking out to meet a deadline because we waited to the last minute to do the work. Our priorities would be in order, and our life would be so much more fruitful.

Unfortunately, we often wait long enough for things to get even WORSE before we start working to make them BETTER. For some (like this cartoon) it ends up being too late. We say “tomorrow” day after day, but as each day passes, we have fewer fewer tomorrows ahead of us. Time is always running out.

Procrastination: To put off. To delay.

Everyone has something they are putting off. Think of what your something is and replace it every time I use “this” in a sentence.

procrastinationTo delay means you will eventually have to do “this”. You think you can choose, but really you are fooling yourself – and making life harder.  You can do “this” now, when you have more time left to get it done, because there is one thing I know - you are younger today than you will be tomorrow. So, if doing “this” NOW is most definitely better than tomorrow, tell me again why in the world you are putting “this” off?

In the world of fitness, there are no shortcuts. Yet, most people will choose to attempt a shortcut before they ever attempt to get fit the right way. They put the PRO in PROcrastinate.

“The soul of the sluggard craves and gets nothing, while the soul of the diligent is richly supplied.” Proverbs 13:4

My Take: This one is easy to understand. Lazy people want – but never get. It’s interesting to me that it doesn’t say “the hard worker” is richly supplied, it says “the diligent” will be richly supplied. Unfortunately, I think many people work very hard at times, but they are aren’t steady or consistant. This is a great reminder of how powerful consistency is.

I see this in the gym all the time. People are so impatient. They work SO hard in bursts, but they lack consistency. Like I’ve said before, it’s not about what you do today, it’s about what you can repeat daily. Everyone can do something amazing at times, but can you keep repeating that day after day? That is what success requires – consistency, dedication and constant correction to stay on the right track.

“The hand of the diligent will rule, while the slothful will be put to forced labor.” Proverbs 12:24

My Take: This one is particularly interesting to me. It implies that people who actually avoid work, are going to likely end up working hard (probably even harder). If you think about it, this applies to every part of our life – relationships, our spiritual life, our job, and definitely to our health. After years of being lazy and lacking discipline in their diet, a person can have a wake up call, and then it IS much tougher for them than other people who has been working on it all their life.

Consider these 4 Communications Styles When Delivering your Next Presentation

You may be presenting to a group from within the same industry or even department, but that doesn’t mean everyone in your audience has the same preferred communications style. Different people have very different ways they prefer to give and receive information. Which means that the kind of delivery that engages some people may send others in your audience scrambling for the exits.  One of the big challenges when presenting to a mixed group is correctly adapting your communication style so your whole audience stays focused on what you’re saying.

To make it easier, we distilled it down into four basic default communication styles people can fall into. These are not personality types; this deals specifically with how you like to give and get information. Here’s a brief description of each default communication style:

The Intuitive type refers to those people who are not terribly emotional, but who are quite free form. Intuitive types don’t necessarily like things to flow from A to B to C and so on. They like to cut to the chase, so it’s best to skip directly to the end: what’s the real value you are bringing this person today? If you can get the Intuitive types in your audience to buy in on the end result right away upfront, you’ve got a much better shot at getting them to listen to all the other stuff you’ve got to say.The Analytical type refers to those people who prefer things unemotional but linear. These are your “just the facts” kinds of people. They don’t want to hear a lot of warm-and-fuzzy feeling words, so don’t waste the Analytical-type communicator’s time by telling them you understand their pain; instead just give them the numbers and data they need and want.The Functional type refers to people who generally like their communication to be emotional and linear. These folks like to have control of the process so it’s always best to move in a linear fashion: from A, to B, to C and then follow through right to the end. These are the folks who want the warm-and-fuzzy emotional approach.   So feel free to dive right into all the details such as: Who else is going to be involved/ how getting involved will make them “feel”/ who else they will touch by getting involved, etc.  You can’t just come in and dump a bunch of facts on personal-type communicators, even if they are startling facts. These folks are still going to need a more interpersonal connection.

Even from these brief descriptions of the four communications styles, the conundrum is obvious: they all want something different. The good news is that, by knowing what the 4 types are, you can plan your next presentation knowing you need to hit all 4 types in your delivery. And there’s a certain order they present their information, in order to communication to each style. They begin by addressing the Intuitive types, then they speak to the Analytical types, then to the Functional types and they close by speaking to the Personal types. We see this often in presidential speeches or wherever there’s a mixed audience of preferred communication styles. Working in this order, from the Intuitive to the Analytical to the Functional to the Personal addresses attention span: Intuitives have the shortest attention span, then the Analyticals, then the Functionals and the Personals have the longest attention spans.

Movie Review: ‘Kai Po Che’

Three new faces, a second-time director and a novel as the basis of the plot; in simple terms, this is what is the essence of ‘Kai Po Che’. However, you’d be mistaken if you feel it would be worth a watch for just these credentials. Abhishek Kapoor returns after the blockbuster success of ‘Rock On!!’ (2008) with a film that brings male-bonding to the forefront yet again. Chetan Bhagat’s novel, ’3 Mistakes of my Life’, is adapted to bring to the screens what promises to be nothing short of magical and packed to the rim with the real India. However, does it set itself apart from similar concepts that have graced Indian cinema over the last decade or so? Moreover, could a virtually unknown star-cast, no item song and no big star involvement really hit a chord with the audiences?

‘Kai Po Che’ is the story of three friends. Ishaan (Sushant Singh Rajput) is very much unmotivated by anything other than cricket, Govind’s (Raj Kumar Yadav) goal is to own his shop and have financial stability and Omi (Amit Sadh) is always finding himself being lured by his politician uncle. When the three set out to open their own sports academy, their only option is to get a loan from Omi’s uncle. The academy allows Ishaan to fulfill his dream of training hopefuls in cricket, a sport he excelled in in his earlier years. Govind handles the finances of the business as well as tutoring Ishaan’s sister in maths, pending her upcoming exams. Set in 2001's Ahmedabad, the story’s turning point is the Gujarat earthquake which happened at the time and this event sees the lives of all three change considerably with the intertwining of their business, sport and also the world of politics all playing a part.

In a mere two hours, it is difficult for a viewer not to be encompassed by the friendship and camaraderie portrayed in ‘Kai Po Che’. Under Kapoor’s direction, one sees real-life events being woven into a very human tale; the Gujarat earthquake, the India-Australia test series and also massacre of Godhra. The depiction of a friendship – a male bond – has perhaps never been put to the audiences in such a way that isn’t entirely coming-of-age but more about different identities coming together and relationships almost becoming that little bit more subtle in the grand scheme of things. There is a delicate way about the characters that finds its way unknowingly to an audience’s heart. Whether it be the foundation of Bhagat’s writing, the way the story has been adapted or how Kapoor has brought all of this to the screen would be unfair to pinpoint. It could also be an amalgamation of all three.

The three newbies, Singh Rajput, Sadh and Yadav, are heroes who will be remembered fondly as those who held a film on their shoulders by talent alone. Singh Rajput plays a not very likable character who is hard to comprehend a lot of the time but he plays him with such conviction that even in the piercingly heart-breaking scenes, the audience wants him to outshine. Sadh’s rendition of a character forced into politics is full of many colours but he sees victory in performance alone albeit with a little time in the beginning for him to settle into his character. It has to be said that Yadav is the one who provides the tangibleness that the overall plot needed. His awkward but straight-forward character comes to life in his execution. Puri plays her role as Ishaan’s sister and Govind’s love extremely well, giving the light-hearted bubbliness that would make an otherwise hearty plot a dull narrative. The ensemble cast of the movie are also perfect right from the Muslim boy that Ishaan mentors to Omi’s uncle.

With Amit Trivedi’s earthy melodies to compliment the movie and Swanand Kirkire poetically apt lyrics, a three-song strong album creates huge impact in capturing the heart and soul of the movie. Manjha, Meethi Boliyaan and Shubhaarambh all serve well and are picturised minus the usual Bollywood razzmatazz and this only adds to their subtle but immensely effective appeal in the overall feel of the movie.

An audience would find it increasingly difficult after watching ‘Kai Po Che’ not to be touched by the undertones of friendship in all its imperfect ways. When the opening scene is of Omi being released from prison, it’s a given that something is going to go very wrong but yet there is a charm about ‘Kai Po Che’ that is almost hard to put your finger on. It makes you fall in love with Gujarat, with independence, with bromance. ‘Kai Po Che’ is a soulful, well-made and thought-provoking to say the least. It shows how the imperfection of life has an impact on friendship and ambition but yet you somehow go away with a smile on your face knowing that this is perhaps one of the best films that you will see this year… and the year’s merely two months in.

If rumours are to be believed then Katrina Kaif has bagged the lead role in Farah Khan’s upcoming blockbuster ‘Happy New Year’ opposite Shah Rukh Khan.

After ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ (2012), the fresh pairing will once again light up the silver screen with their sizzling chemistry. Earlier there were reports that Priyanka Chopra will be the leading lady in the multi-starrer. Khan (Farah) is yet to confirm the developments.

Kaif and Khan (Farah) have previously worked together in ‘Tees Maar Khan’ (2010) but proved a box office dud.

Abhishek Bachchan who also stars in ‘Happy New Year’, is working with Kaif in ‘Dhoom 3'.

Good Intentions, Poor Results: Works like a Horse, Eats like a Pig

Here is my fifth and final blog on why people seem to have such good intentions, but get such poor results. In each blog I give both the problem and the solution. If you missed this series, here’s a recap…

overweightThis person has great intentions. They work their butt off in the gym – BUT, when it comes to food, it’s a big FAIL.

This person likely enjoys working out, or at least doesn’t mind it. As a result, they are the first to post their insane workouts and share their their hard work, so people can see their amazing efforts. As a result, people feel so sorry for this type of person when they find out they aren’t losing weight because they see how hard they work. This person looks like they have great intentions but the gods are just not on this person’s sides. (and if you know me, that’s supposed to be funny since I only believe in one God, not mystical gods that help people lose weight).

OK, so back to this hard worker. The problem is, this person fully believes they should be able to control their weight with exercise – and while exercise is helpful and can improve health, it is no competition for food. Exercise will always lose. Or, they are in denial, and think they are eating healthier, and eating fewer calories, than they truly are.

Solution: This person needs to understand that tough exercise is not enough when it comes to weight loss. They can be a maniac on the aerobics floor (my FlashDance throwback), but until they are a maniac in the kitchen, they will never 100% reap the benefits of their hard work. It’s time for this person to go all the way with their fitness – both in the gym and at the dinner table.
